There's a moment every artist knows — the few seconds before you walk on stage when everything either feels locked in or something feels off. More often than not, when something feels off, it traces back to the gear. An amp that wasn't dialed in, a drum kit that wasn't quite right, a keyboard that showed up without the right stand. The performance hasn't even started and the night is already uphill.
That's what backline is really about. Not just the gear itself, but the confidence that comes from knowing it's right before you ever play a note.
At Go Live Productions, we've been providing backline rentals for artists, tours, and productions of every scale since 2006. Here's what we wish every artist and crew knew before show day.
Not all rental gear is created equal. Tour-ready means the equipment doesn't just function — it's clean, road-tested, easy to use, and looks good on stage. A drum kit with worn heads and missing hardware isn't tour-ready. An amp with a crackling input jack isn't tour-ready.
At Go Live, we take gear maintenance seriously because we've seen what happens when someone else doesn't. Every piece of equipment in our inventory is maintained, inspected, and prepped before it goes out the door. We're particularly proud of our drum inventory — it's one of the best in Nashville — and we stock spare parts as standard because the last thing anyone needs is a broken head with thirty minutes to showtime. Our keyboard selection is also extensive, and for artists who want that classic sound, we even carry a Hammond 1958 B3 organ with pedals — one of the few backline companies in Nashville that does
One of our long-time clients, Chuck F., Production Manager at Lifeway Media, put it simply:
❝They have great gear, and the staff are well versed in their gear. They have one of the best supplies of drums in Nashville. If I need something special they will find whatever it is and take care of us.❞
That's the standard we hold ourselves to on every order.

One of the most common mistakes artists make is waiting too long. Backline requests can come in anywhere from a few days to a few months in advance, and while we do our best to accommodate last-minute needs (our team is available at all hours), earlier is always better — especially if you have specific brand or model preferences.
When you reach out to us, here's what helps us help you:
That last point is worth expanding on. We've had requests as specific as a particular color drum kit to match a stage design, and requests as simple as a basic four-piece setup. Both are completely fine. We'll match your exact specifications where we can, and if we can't source something precisely, we'll find a quality substitute and communicate that upfront.
We also genuinely enjoy the unusual requests — and with one of the largest drum selections and shell banks in Nashville, we're usually well equipped to handle them. One of our favorite examples was a music video production that needed a large drum kit setup but required a quiet environment on set. We configured the kit with mesh heads and doubled the cymbals to give them the full visual of a real performance setup while keeping the noise level where they needed it. That kind of creative problem-solving is exactly what we're here for.
Some things artists commonly forget to include: drum head preferences, amp wattage, keyboard size and weight requirements, and tuning preferences. The more detail you give us, the better we can serve you.
Here's what a typical show day looks like on the backline side.
Gear arrives during load-in and our team works directly with your stage manager to position everything correctly on stage. From there, we coordinate with audio to get power and signal running to the PA. By the time soundcheck rolls around, everything should be set, dialed in, and ready for you to play.
During the show, if you have a technician on site, they're there for you — adjusting, troubleshooting, and handling anything that comes up so you can stay focused on performing. An experienced backline tech isn't just a delivery driver. They know the gear, they understand a live stage environment, and they can solve problems quickly when the pressure is on. That's the difference between having support and just having equipment.
After the show, we handle strike and load-out so the process is as clean at the end as it was at the beginning.

In general, the most common backline issues come down to miscommunication upfront — wrong specs, missing information on the rider, or last-minute changes that didn't get passed along. The best prevention is a detailed conversation before show day, not on it.
But sometimes it's not miscommunication — sometimes it's just live production being live production. We once rented a custom piano shell to a client for an outdoor event. Everything went smoothly through the show, but toward load-out a serious storm blew through and took the piano shell right off the stage. It was completely destroyed. Rather than call it a loss and move on, we went back to the shop and built a better replacement from scratch. The client got a new shell that was an improvement on the original, and we consider that a pretty good outcome for a situation that could have gone in a very different direction.
That's the mindset we bring to every job. Things can (and often do) go sideways in live production — weather, equipment, timing, last-minute changes — and what matters is how you respond. We'd rather over-solve a problem than leave a client without what they need.
If you arrive and something isn't right, tell us immediately. We'd rather know the moment you walk in than hear about it after the show. Our team is responsive and we'll get creative and work to make it right.
Before your next show, run through this checklist:

Great performances start long before the first song. They start with the right gear, prepared by people who care about getting it right — and a team you can actually reach when you need them.
Whether you're coming through Nashville for a one-off date, heading out on tour, or producing a large-scale event, we'd love to support your show.
